Today I had to retire 13 people

And it was not easy. For me but more importantly for my team that left the company today, this was not easy, in any way, shape or form. There are some who enjoy this type of thing but I for one am not one of them. These are employees who I hired myself. Personally. Mostly over 2 years ago. In a fair world, I would have been able to maintain them in perpetuity, but the cold harsh winds of business dictate the order of the day. For that I am sorry.
Coming off Q3 2013 — our best quarter ever, from the outside it may not make too much sense: why one would have to retire 16.4% of my very loyal staff. There is constant debate and equilibrium at play amongst all early stage startups. The question is simple. What is the right size of the company?
