Saying Goodbye

Last week was a pretty negative week at iROKO. For the first time in months, I finally managed to land back in Lagos. As always, every little piece of negative news is met with glee, high fives and ‘I told you he was an idiot’. Then it is amplified and mutated into something completely out of sync with reality. I confirmed it was accurate. But it wasn’t new news. Over the last 6 months we have shifted into a new direction at iROKO. In as much as I can’t discuss it at length this week, it is a massively positive one. The resultant impact was the loss of 130 jobs. 96 of those were contractors who were brought in very recently to work on a specific project. Nonetheless, it’s a massive shame and something I wish on no one. But it’s not abnormal in the startup world. Snapchat, Twitter, Evernote, Rovio and Yahoo. Every relatively large consumer internet company I know in Nigeria has had to adjust their team in the last 18 months. Of course it’s not reported. But those in the know, know....
