NBC & the Total Destruction of Nollywood in Nigeria

One of the top series currently airing on IROKO + ROK (DStv) is The African Couple. As serendipity would have it, the new season is about to be released this weekend. The crew is largely Nigerian but 100% of the main and supporting cast are Ghanaian. That is minus Mrs Njoku. The only Nigerian there is Mary. Outside of Nigeria and Ghana, most people don't even know or care about the difference. Yes the accent is different, but so are the Igbo, Edo and Yoruba accents. English nah English. A number of years ago, Nigerians who loved Nollywood actually preferred Ghanaian movies. Nadia Buari, Jackie Appiah, Majid et al were outselling the largest stars Nollywood had to offer in Nigeria. Now, rather than take this bounty as a positive as they had direct access to the largest film market in West Africa, for some reason the Ghanaian producers and distributors agitated for legislation to 'protect their industry' from Nigeria's content hordes.
