Being around the entertainment world I always hear unwritten money stories of excesses on part of super wealthy private individuals (or politicians) trying to curry favour with our new wave of young cool celebrities. I would hazard to guess that 50% of the monetization of entertainment in Nigeria is via these latent means. My wife is a well known Nollywood actress and introduced me to the term or common practice known as ‘thank you for coming’ (a gift from the event patron — basically an envelope stuffed with cash). Most celebrities won’t bother to turn up to an event for a rich person without some implicit understanding they will be ’thanked for coming’.
