When people tell me to focus I chuckle. Focus on what? is my usual response. Focus for focus’ sake is kinda foolish. Focusing on the wrong things ultimately leads you to failure. In any business there are usually a hand full of key business drivers which yield 80% of the value creation. In startups, typically less than a year old, focusing on the wrong things can easily drive you out of business. Founders killing startups are arguably the most common form of startup death.
The problem is, as an entrepreneur you are usually free to explore your heart’s whim. You are an idea generator. Where others see the world as full of problems, entrepreneurs only see opportunities, which means you tend to run multiple things at the same time. In the dark days, when it was just me and my thoughts, I would routinely play around with several ideas at the same time. All would be startups failing at any particular point in time. But I used to try them.
